Turning Time into Personal Style: The Waitit Experience

Waitit is a high-end iOS application designed to transform the way users track their most anticipated moments. While most countdown apps offer generic, utility-first interfaces, Waitit treats every event as an opportunity for digital self-expression.

Our goal was to build a powerful engine that allows users to create personalized counters and pin them directly to their home screens as beautifully crafted widgets. We took a simple utility and evolved it into a sophisticated design hub, offering an unprecedented level of customization that reflects the user's unique aesthetic, from minimalist elegance to bold, avant-garde styles.

In detail
Mastering the Paradox of Choice in Personalization

The main challenge of Waitit was to offer massive variety without overwhelming the user or breaking the platform’s visual integrity. Standard iOS widgets often feel disconnected from the user’s personal wallpaper and home screen layout. We aimed to solve this by developing a vast library of 30+ unique widget designs.

To ensure market fit, we started with over 100 conceptual options and utilized diverse focus groups to narrow them down to the most desirable styles. This data-driven curation allowed us to create a roadmap for V1 and V2, ensuring that every user-whether a student tracking a graduation or a professional counting down to a vacation-finds a visual language that resonates with them.

Waht we did
A Modular Countdown and Branding Ecosystem

We developed a complete product experience that included:

  • A streamlined 2-step creation flow for setting events, reminders, and repetition logic.
  • A diverse library of 30+ unique widget designs with 5-10 color schemes each.
  • Customizable "Simple Widgets" allowing for personal images from Unsplash or local galleries.
  • A robust state-management system ensuring smooth transitions between "Counting," "Today," and "Done" states.
  • A full brand identity, including logo design and high-fidelity App Store marketing materials.
How we did it
Curation, Testing, and Technical Feasibility

Everything started with an intensive discovery phase where we explored over 100 visual directions. To avoid the "generic utility" trap, we conducted sessions with a highly diverse focus group, representing different age groups and aesthetic preferences. This allowed us to select the 15 most popular styles for the initial launch and reserve another 15 for the second release.

A major part of our strategy was balancing visual ambition with the strict constraints of iOS widget development. We worked closely on the logic of how data is rendered within small and medium containers, ensuring that even the most complex animations and layouts remain crisp and performant on any device.

Working progress
Visual Curation and Systematic Architecture
Strategic Style Selection and Focus Groups
We didn't just pick "pretty" designs; we picked styles that represented distinct visual subcultures. By analyzing the top 100 concepts through focus group feedback, we identified the most effective patterns for engagement. This process ensured that the final 30 styles offered a true spectrum of choice, ranging from retro-digital displays to organic, fluid shapes. This curation phase was vital in defining a product that feels "premium" and "custom-made" rather than mass-produced, directly increasing the app's perceived value in a crowded marketplace.

Unified Architecture and State Logic
Despite the high visual diversity, we had to ensure the app felt like a single, cohesive product. We established a strict set of rules for element placement and behavior across different widget sizes. We scrupulously mapped out the "life cycle" of a countdown, designing specific states for the day of the event (Today) and the completion phase (Done). This systematic approach to state management ensures that no matter which of the 30+ styles a user chooses, the widget behaves predictably and maintains a high-end feel throughout its entire duration on the home screen.
Final stage
A Production-Ready Visual Powerhouse

The final delivery for Waitit was a massive Figma ecosystem that went far beyond basic UI screens. We provided the client with a documented library of 30+ unique widget designs, each with its own set of color palettes and animation logic. This included a full branding package and a suite of marketing assets designed specifically for the App Store to drive high conversion rates.

By providing a clear framework for how these widgets adapt to various iOS constraints, we ensured a smooth transition from design to development, giving the client a scalable product that is both a functional tool and a premium lifestyle accessory.

Results
Elevating Digital Identity and User Loyalty

The final product successfully positions Waitit as a leader in the personalized widget space. The design-led approach resulted in several key business advantages:

  • High user retention driven by the deep psychological satisfaction of personalized home screen aesthetics.
  • A 92% approval rating from the focus groups regarding the variety and quality of the V1 style library.
  • Full design consistency across 30+ radically different styles through a unified architectural framework.
  • A scalable roadmap for future updates, with V2 designs already validated and ready for implementation.

"The team didn't just make an app; they built a design engine. They managed to take over 30 completely different visual styles and make them work together within a single, perfect design system. Our focus group results were through the roof, and the final App Store assets look absolutely world-class." - Denis Meshcheriakov, founder @ Waitit
